Scales, which one is worth its weight in powder

I’ve been reloading for a few moons now, I started with a Lee beam scale then purchased the RCBS Charge Master 1500, great scale for tactical loads. Then I got into benchrest so I bought a Creedmoor TSX 925, it worked great for about two years. Then I had two ship it back but Creedmoor sent me another scale before I shipped mine back, great customer service. But this scale is doing the same thing, it will not hold zero. What is the next and last scale I should purchase?

I’ve never used an electronic scale in this price range but the cheaper ones I’ve tried have all failed to hold zero for more than a few measurements. I am currently using an RCBS beam scale that I read thru a camera to minimize the “parallax” error in alignment. I use a bit of graphite lube at the bearing points to enhance motion freeness. Otherwise, it’s all stock. I also shoot benchrest so I understand the need for accurate and quick measurements.

I have thought about going back to a beam scale but I have too many benchrest cartridges.

I have an OHAUS 5-0-5 Reloading Scale, 511 x 0.1 Grain | Scales Plus and boy is it accurate! Sadly it’s not a first choice when loading lots of rounds or loading in the wind.

I have been using an A&D FX-120i for several years now, and have no complaints whatsoever. Accuracy is 0.02 grains, and holds zero well. Not inexpensive, but worth every penny IMHO.

I have seen this scale but it was paired with the trickler system and yes it is not for the faint at heart when it comes to cost. If I can purchase just the scale I think this might be my last purchase as far as scales are concerned

I purchased the scale only, and also the glass cup with handle. The top cover has a hole in the center, which I place a powder funnel which extends down to just above the glass cup. I use a basic manual trickler, and trickle into the funnel. The trickler needs to be supported such that it doesn’t contact the scale in any way, and it’s also handy to have a support shelf to rest your hand on to trickle. A little yankee ingenuity will get you there.

Thanks I was just looking at the A&D scale, the instruction manual looks a little intimidating. I have been throwing my basic charge, .1 grain less than target weight with my Charge Master, then using the TRX-925 along with my trickler to achieve my target weight. My support shelf was my knee. But having to re-zero and check he load has gotten very old really fast, again. Do you dump your powder charge through the top of the A&D as well?

My creedmore scale needs to have the empty pan back on the scale every time to “zero” itself , i had problems trying to throw powder off scale and weigh , made a mount for my rcbs thrower to dump directly on the scale after a return to zero and have not had any problems, drop close and trickle with a little dandy, can hold 1-2 hundredth all day, slow but accurate semi low budget. Fx120i seems to be the standard, ce has them @495.00

We are doing the exact same thing but after about two charges when I set the empty pan back on the Creedmoor scale it has gained weight. And if I dump the previous charge back on the scale after re-zeroing, that charge is slightly over. I’m already in this rabbit hole so I might as well go deeper to find what I’m in search of.

I’m new here and was reading through this thread. I have the FX120 and Dandy trickler. I bought the set of Lee dippers. I use the one closest to my load and trickle the rest. It’s not fast but I’m low volume so I’m ok with it.

Dandy trickler? I haven’t heard of it.

Works pretty good. You adjust the weight on the stem to get where is will drop a kernal at a time.

Thanks I plan to look into this.

If you buy it let me know how it works for you. I have had mine for almost four years.

Just went to the Dandy web page, they are sold out but I will keep my eye on them and will be purchasing one when back in stock.

I use an RCBS matchmaster, which is good to about .02 grains (about 1 kernel of varget), along with a Dandy trickler for years now. I set the matchmaster to dispense .02 low and if need be trickle up. My matchmaster tends to throw a little high.

Fred, I’m using a 15 year old Charge Master 1500 that only gets down to .1g plus I’m keeping my eye open for a Dandy when they are back in stock. I use a lot of H322, N133, Benchmark and BL-C(2). When I was shooting my 6BR I used a lot of Varget but I recently switched to the PPCs

This is my current set up while waiting for the Ingenuity Precision dropper system. The Hornady was never going to get me to single digit SDs. I use that to drop the bulk of the load then trickle up to the finished weight.
