New Impact precision NBK 7saum

I have been loading for about a year now and probably shot and loaded over 2k rounds in many different caliber’s. My problem sounds like pressure but the NEW ADG look great primer looks fine and no swipes on the cases. The bolt lift is easy to the top then it gets extremely hard to open. What could it be?

Is this on the first firing?

Hi Patrick,

From the research I’ve done, hard bolt lift without classic pressure signs (flattened primers, ejector swipes, etc.) is actually pretty common and isn’t always true over-pressure.

A few things other shooters often point to:

  • Case not being sized back enough (especially shoulder bump). The bolt can lift normally but bind during primary extraction.

  • Tight or rough chamber / carbon ring near the shoulder or throat causing the case to stick.

  • Brass growth or thick necks, especially with newer or stiffer brass like ADG.

  • Less commonly, headspace or bolt lug contact issues that only show up under load.

Most people suggest checking shoulder bump with a comparator, confirming the chamber is clean (including carbon), and not relying solely on primers as a pressure indicator. From what I’ve read, primers alone can look “fine” even when extraction is telling you something else.

I’ve been re-loading approximately 20 years. The worst caliber I have for hard bolt lifts is my 300 RUM. My oldest cases are the worst. I believe some of these magnums swell at the case head so low that your sizing dies can’t remove it all especially when just bumping back shoulders. I’ve never used your brand of brass so therefore I can’t testify the exact cause. Due to the fact the brass is rather new would make me wonder is the brass is too soft around the case head. Food for thought. Good luck.

Thanks for the post @bdavis5799. What type of brass are you using now when you shoot?

I’ve had this gun for 15 years or better. Was built for Elk and Mule deer hunts out west. I have Remington, Winchester and Federal brass. There was not other brass for it when gun was built. Most of the shooting was done during load development for a multitude of different bullets. My solution at that time was when I had a hard bolt lifts that piece of brass didn’t get reloaded. Gun is a barrel burner therefore I do not target shoot with it. Only shoot now for yearly verifications of DOPE & centering. Have other tamer guns for that.

Thanks, I appreciate the feedback!

I’ll get this post under the eyes of the manufacturing team and let them know about how our dies are reacting to Remington, Winchester and Federal Brass. All valuable info.

What specific die are you using?

RCBS FL .300 Ultra MAG P/N 17601 Group: A with a RCBS 38 Shell holder. I had the gun made from a late 50’s early 60’s Remington 264 mag action after I shot the barrel out. Had it action trued with a Heart barrel and McMillian stock that is bedded. Mercury shock absorber in stock with a radial muzzle break that tames this beast to a 308 level of recoil. Best 5 shot group was 3/8”. But with age is still consistently sub MOA. Killed a few Mule deer out to 400 yards.
